Electric power distribution is electricity power being carried from the transmission system to the consumers. This final stage of delivery of electric power distributes power through substations that connect to the transmission system and lower the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV and 35 kV with the use of transformers.
Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage power to distribution transformers located near the consumer premises. Distribution transformers again lower the voltage to the utilization voltage used by lighting, industrial equipment or household appliances. All of the equipment used in this process needs protection from surges caused either by lightning activity or switching events.
