Link Boxes & Enclosures

At PD Devices we manufacture many different SPDs, we have produced MOVs for many years and our market requirements are for ever evolving. Fairly new to our range of products are link boxes, but what are they and how do they work?

Link Boxes are effectively cable earthing connection boxes that can provide some really unique challenges, both in terms of physical and electrical requirements to produce and make up critical parts of high-voltage underground cable systems.

A Link Box provides a sealed, weatherproof enclosure for bonding cable earths at what is the weakest point in the system – cable joints and terminations. It also provides an easy access point for maintenance purposes, to allow testing of shield breaks and cable connections.

Link Boxes may be configured as single point bonding for the cable earths, or may be cross bonded to reduce or eliminate circulating currents.

We manufacture and install our own SVL (Sheath Voltage Limiters) inside our Link Boxes to ensure that transient over voltages, due to lightning or switching surges, don’t cause any breakdown of the cable jacket or other parts of the cable system.

HSA/50/100/230RCF - All-Mode - Class 1 Surge Arrester

The HSA/50/100/230RCF is an all-mode Class 1 surge arrester to BS EN 61643-11. Designed for the protection of the incoming supply and main switchboards of large structures in high lightning exposure areas, the arrester is an ideal solution for installation at the boundary of LPZ0a/LPZ1 to help fulfil the requirements of BS EN 62305.

HSA/80/80/230RCF - All-Mode - Class 2 Surge Arrester

The HSA/80/80/230RCF is an all-mode Class 2 surge arrester to BS EN 61643-11. Designed for the protection of the distribution boards of large structures in high lightning exposure areas, the arrester is an ideal solution for installation at the boundary of LPZ0b/LPZ1 or LPZ1/LPZ2 to help fulfil the requirements of BS EN 62305.

HSA/40/40/230RCF - All-Mode - Class 2/3 Surge Arrester

The HSA/40/40/230RCF is an all-mode Class 2/3 surge arrester to BS EN 61643-11. Designed for the protection of sensitive equipment, the arrester is an ideal solution for installation at the boundary of LPZ1/LPZ2 to help fulfil the requirements of BS EN 62305.

EDC-TVS Series - IP68 Rated - TVS - 24V & 48V - DC Diode Surge Protector

TVS diode based surge protection for 2 wire DC circuits. IP 68, UV stable enclosure, designed for outdoor use. 24 and 48V DC nominal voltage, 25A load current. DC input and output connectors for ease of connection. Zero-volt changeover contacts for remote status indication. All mode protection.

These Link Boxes represent a range designed for use on a 400kV power distribution system. They incorporate Sheath Voltage Limiters SVL45-DNB to provide a reliable voltage limiting capability. This is required where lightning fault conditions and switching operations can cause overvoltage stresses on the cable armoured sheath. The internal layout will permit ready access for field test purposes.

These Link boxes are robustly constructed from 3mm thick Grade 316 Stainless Steel. A 3mm thick EPDM rubber gasket effectively protects the internal construction when the lid is located and firmly bolted into place. The lid is also designed to be lockable for safety and security reasons.

Type 1 / Type 2 - These arresters are recommended for use in the Lightning protection zones concept at the boundaries of LPZ 0-1 (according to IEC 1312-1 and EN62305)
